The Role of SPRI in a Sustainable Future

Dr. James Hoff
Research Director, CEIR and President, TEGNOS Research

Dr. James HoffBeginning with the founding of the U.S. Green Building Council ten years ago, the sustainable building movement has gained significant public recognition. And while everyone in the roofing industry is aware of this emerging trend, there have been few opportunities for industry stakeholders to discuss the implications of sustainability and chart an industry course for a sustainable future. Such a discussion is especially critical for SPRI, given its role as an industry leader.

In order to stimulate this important discussion, the SPRI Board has asked Dr. Jim Hoff of TEGNOS Research to conduct a survey of SPRI members. The purpose of the survey is to better understand the opinions and needs of the general membership in regard to the growing sustainable building movement.  The survey will then be used as part of a larger process to establish a formal SPRI position regarding sustainability and the role of SPRI in the sustainable building community. Results of the survey will be reviewed by Dr. Jim Hoff of TEGNOS Research during the SPRI 2010 Convention. Dr. Hoff will use the survey results to facilitate a general discussion regarding SPRI’s role and mission for a sustainable future.

Dr. Jim Hoff is an experienced researcher in the building materials industry and currently serves as research director for the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing in Washington, DC which is the industry’s voice for the green building movement. Dr. Hoff also serves as President of TEGNOS, a research and consulting organization dedicated to expanding understanding of the building envelope. Dr. Hoff  has also published numerous research articles on building system performance, quality management, and life cycle analysis.
