Understanding ASCE 7-16 Changes and Impacts on Wind Loads

Recent revisions to ASCE 7-16 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures will impact roofing industry professionals who have used the ASCE 7 Standard in the past and those who are just beginning to use it for determining wind loads on structures. The resulting differences between ASCE 7-16 and previous versions include, but are not limited to, revised wind speed maps, changes in external pressure coefficients for roof components and cladding, and the addition of pressure coefficients to use for roof mounted solar arrays. On this front, FM also recently made changes to the ratings calculator within RoofNav and their Loss Prevention Data Sheets to reflect FM’s partial adoption of ASCE 7-16 (which excludes the adoption of the revised wind maps).
Mr. Dick Davis of FM Global will be the webinar presenter with the question-and-answer session moderated by a representative of the Chemical Fabrics & Film Association. Attendees will learn to identify the significant changes to the ASCE 7-16 wind revisions, the differences between ASCE 7-10 and ASCE 7-16 and the consequences of those differences, as well as how to navigate FM’s partial adoption of ASCE 7-16.
